8 Million Litres Daily: Bringing Clean Water to Pilgrims in Iraq & Communities Globally

The Lady Fatemah Trust, in partnership with the Jaffer Family Foundation, is helping ensure that millions of pilgrims visiting the holy shrines in Karbala and Najaf (Southern Iraq) have consistent access to safe, clean, cooled water on tap throughout the year. This system has transformed the experience of a thirsty pilgrim - reducing the wait for a glass of cooled water from long minutes to short seconds. At peak capacity, it can deliver up to 8 million litres a day across the two cities - supporting mass gatherings with dignity, safety, and reliability. By providing water through taps and purification infrastructure, the project also helps reduce reliance on plastic bottles, cutting down plastic waste, microplastics, and the heavy logistics of transporting and distributing bottled water. And the impact goes beyond Iraq. Through our wider water projects, The Lady Fatemah Trust provides safe drinking water to communities globally - in and around key community hubs such as places of worship, madrasahs, schools, hospitals, and community centres. Public access points also allow mothers to fill buckets closer to home, easing the daily burden of collecting water and helping protect families from dehydration and waterborne disease - especially for children, and those who are sick, pregnant, or vulnerable.
