This video is part of my “Hollywood Hills Canyons, Passes & Short Cuts” Series & Playlist. This is one of the two most heavily used passes across the Hollywood Hills. Cahuenga Pass started out as a trail and was then used as a freight rail line as well as for the Pacific Electric Red Car. The pass connects downtown as well as much of the eastern city side to the San Fernando Valley. The Hollywood Bowl and the Ford Theater both sit in the pass. You can search the internet for early photos of the pass. There are plenty of them. The streets that feed into the pass from the south are Highland Ave (most used) and Cahuenga Blvd E. On the north side are Ventura Blvd and Lankershim for points west, and Barham Blvd from Burbank and Glendale. There are old off-ramps and on-ramps that have been closed off for years, likely because they were not designed for the number of cars that exist today and would cause back up’s back onto U.S. 101. Two of them are easily spotted from the Barham Bridge. On this video, we travel southbound on Cahuenga Blvd through the pass, hopping over Pilgrimage Bridge to the easterly version of Cahuenga Blvd, then eastbound on Franklin Ave, and then finally southbound on Vine St to the famous corner of Hollywood Blvd and Vine Street. One really fun excursion is to climb the dirt foot trail up to Cahuenga Peak, which is accessed from roads just to the northeast of the pass. On top of the peak is a huge tree that can be spotted from any point in the east San Fernando Valley since it is the only tree up there. If you want a stellar view of both the city and the valley, this is the spot.
