SOUNDBITE (Indonesian) Hari Siburian, Visitor: "One of the challenges that electric car manufacturers must answer is that they must start building infrastructure for battery charging, if it's only used in Jakarta we don't have a problem but when we leave greater Jakarta we become worried (because there aren't enough charging stations)." 26. MG EV sport car STORYLINE: The future of Indonesia’s automobiles and motor bikes is electric—at least according to the exhibitors at the Indonesia International Motor Show opening in the country's capital city of Jakarta on Thursday. That's despite the country's own slow uptake of electric vehicles and motorbikes, which only make up a small fraction of the vehicle fleet of the world's fourth most populated country. Experts say a lack of infrastructure, high upfront costs and low performance hinder the adoption of EVs in the vast archipelagic nation. Over 50 International and domestic brands were on display at the massive multi-room exhibition hall, with several brands debuting models in Indonesia. Many of the models debuted were hybrids or electric vehicles: Chinese automaker BYD unveiled their Sealion 7 electric SUV, while Vietnamese automaker VinFast's electric-powered VF 3 mini SUV had its Indonesia debut. The event also welcomed a new automaker to Indonesia, with Honri- a Chinese electric vehicle- making its debut with the five-passenger Boma EV. While the show floor was dominate by Asian companies, other international makers were present as well, including Germany's Volkswagen and BMW's Mini. Motor bikes— of which Indonesia has one of the largest fleets in the world, with over 132 million registered in 2023— were also a main staple of event, with foreign-made Royal Enfield and Vespa motorbikes on display alongside Indonesia-made Alva motorbikes. A much smaller part of the exhibit featured fossil fuel-powered jet skis, pontoons and boats, which can be seen on the coastlines, rivers and lakes of acountry that has over 17,000 islands. Outside the exhibition hall, drivers enjoyed new-car smell as they test drove cars across parking lots and over steep ramps.
