Various of protest STORYLINE: Thousands of protesters took the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday to demand a deal to release the remaining hostages being held in Gaza. Thirteen months after the attack by Hamas militants which killed 1,200 people, triggered the war and saw 250 people taken to Gaza, relatives of the hostages and others blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for not doing enough to reach a deal to bring their loved ones home. Saturday also saw Qatar suspend its key mediation efforts between Hamas and Israel after growing frustration with the lack of progress on a cease-fire deal for Gaza. “I really don’t know if it is good or bad," said protester Yehuda Cohen as he spoke about Qatar's decision. "I hope that the fact that they are pushing Hamas to get out of Qatar will push Hamas to go for a deal. Of course they need some way to push Netanyahu to go for a deal," he added. It wasn't immediately clear whether the remaining Hamas leadership hosted by Qatar must leave, or where it would go. A senior Hamas official said they were aware of Qatar’s decision to suspend mediation efforts, “but no one told us to leave.” Hamas has good relations with Iran and Turkey, and some of its leaders are now in Lebanon. However, Qatar is highly likely to return to mediation efforts if both sides show “serious political willingness” to reach a deal, according to an official with Egypt, the other key mediator. The Israeli military response Hamas' October 7 attack has killed more than 43,500 people in Gaza, according to Gaza’s health ministry that does not differentiate between militants and civilians.
