Discover what Australia has to offer the wine world in this Hunter Valley special episode of Spitbucket. The Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest wine growing region and covers a huge area from Maitland, near Newcastle, up to Murrurundi at the foot of the Great Dividing Range. When an route from Sydney to the Hunter was forged in 1820, the sandy flats either side of the Hunter river were found to be ideal for the cultivation of wine. By 1823 around 20 acres of vineyards had been planted. By the latter part of the 19th century, names suchg as Tyrrell, Tulloch and Drayton were stamping their winemaking mark in the Hunter. The Hunter Valley is one of the warmest, most humid and wettest climates in Australia. The soils of the region vary from red duplex, through to sandy loam soils - the ideal growing medium for the Hunter's famous Semillon.
