BEAUMONT - by Sarai Demien The crowd at the Gusher Marathon cheered runners on as they crossed the finish line near the Montagne Center at Lamar University. This was the first race for many of the finishers. Some who placed first in their race. Buddy Lightfoot finished the Marathon first in three hours and fifty two seconds, accomplishing a long-time goal. "I've been training for years. This is my first one I've always wanted to do one and figured why not do it here local," says Lightfoot. Tired from the long race, Lightfoot just wants to relax. "I don't do much celebration. I just go home and get on the couch and watch T.V," says Lightfoot. Andre Ditsch finished second. His first marathon too. "All the training and knowing I can do it. That if I haven't fallen down I can keep going," says Ditsch. Micah Dettmer is smiling after placing first in the half marathon. "It's my first race since college which has been about nine months so I am looking forward to doing more in the future," says Dettmer. Running this race was about more than medals for some. Daniel Villarreal says it's bonding with friends as they push to make it to the finish line. In their own back yard. "If I don't like a race I don't come back. This one I do like it. It's right here where I live in Beaumont so it's hard not to do it," says Villarreal. A race so many enjoy and so close to home.
