Visionary Dialogues: Hilma af Klint, Rudolph Steiner and the Spiritual Aesthetics of the Third Realm Rudolf Steiner | Hilma af Klint | Harvard Divinity School | Spiritual Aesthetics Presented at Harvard Divinity School’s 2025 100 Years Rudolf Steiner Conference, this lecture explores Rudolf Steiner’s conception of the “third realm” of aesthetic experience and its significance for understanding Hilma af Klint’s visionary practice. Steiner describes the third realm as a mediating domain in which sense-perception and spiritual idea enter into living relation. Placing this framework in dialogue with af Klint’s work, I argue that her paintings emerge within an aesthetic onto-epistemology — a disciplined practice in which perception, image, and spiritual idea co-constitute reality. Rather than interpreting her work through abstraction, symbolism, or belief, this talk approaches it as an ontological event: a site where image mediates between visible and invisible worlds, not metaphorically but actually. The third realm offers a framework for understanding how visionary art operates as both cognition and participation — reshaping what counts as knowledge and what counts as real. This lecture continues my broader investigation into the epistemic and ontological implications of the living image and its role in the evolution of consciousness.
