Punjabi Diaspora across the Nations I Shinder Singh Thandi I Second D S Tatla Memorial Lecture I

Dr. Shinder Singh Thandi is now retired but was Lecturer and Visiting Professor in the department of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 2015 till 2020. Before this, he taught at Coventry University (UK) for over three decades and was Head of Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting for six years. His primary teaching interests are in the areas of Sikh Diaspora and Global Development. He was one of the founders and later long-time Convenor of the Punjab Research Group, established in 1984 and has been founder-editor of the Journal of Sikh and Punjab Studies since 1994. He has published widely on different aspects of Sikh Migration and Sikh Diaspora’s Homeland Linkages. His recent paper is a book chapter titled ‘Lived Experiences in the Sikh Diaspora: Diversities, Differentiation, Gender Narratives and Challenges to Tradition’, In Opinderjit Kaur Takhar and Doris R. Jakobsh (eds) Global Sikhs: History, Practices and Identities, (Routledge, 2023). Other notable publications include: growing diversities within Sikh diaspora, Sikh diaspora advocacy and human rights and failure of policies for constructive engagement with the Sikh diaspora. His most recent book publication is an edited book on the 2020-2021 farmers’ movement entitled Agrarian Reform and Farmer Resistance in Punjab: Mobilization and Resilience, published by Routledge in 2023. In the book, besides the Introduction ‘Introduction to Agrarian Reform and the 2020-2021 Farmer Resistance: A Momentous Morcha’, he also has a chapter titled ‘Mera Pind, Mera Sabhyachar, Mera Virsa: Understanding Diaspora Support for the Punjab Kisan Morcha’. Previously he co-authored [with Michael Fisher and Shompa Lahiri] A South Asian History of Britain: Four Centuries of Peoples from the Indian Sub-Continent, (Greenwood Press, 2007) and co-edited: Punjabi Identity in a Global Context [ed. with Pritam Singh, OUP, 1999] and People on the Move: Punjabi Colonial and Post Colonial Migration [edited with Ian Talbot, OUP, 2004]. The lecture will begin with a short tribute and appreciation of Darshan Tatla’s contribution to Punjab and Sikh Studies. It will highlight both my personal relationship with him and the main themes of his academic scholarship. The lecture will move to offer my reflections on evolving diaspora-homeland relations, emphasising the way explanations have shifted from scholars focusing on studying causes of Punjabi migration to formation of Punjabi diaspora(s) and nowadays on understanding multi-layered and complex Punjabi transnational practices. The backdrop to shifts in conceptual thinking is identified as the revolution in IT technologies giving us the Internet which have profoundly transformed Punjabi transnational practices. Importantly, these practices are no longer uni-directional, that is, diaspora connecting towards its homeland but have increasingly become multi-directional, that is, for instance, homeland connecting towards its diaspora and also inter-diaspora connections. These connections are both widening and deepening as global Punjabis engage in more frequent incidences of mobility within diaspora locations. There is, indeed, evidence of not just ‘twice’ migration but also of ‘thrice’ migration of Punjabis as economic and migration opportunities present themselves. The lecture will provide examples of nature of increased transnational practices and their implications for Punjabi families, Punjabi community and for host and home governments. The lecture will conclude with some tentative observations on future evolution of transnational practices and linkages with the homeland of Punjab. #punjabidiaspora #punjabiuniversity #diaspora #centrefordiasporastudies #darshansinghtatla #skhdiaspora
