In this lecture, we're taking a look at the work of the post-Hegelian, German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach's most celebrated work (tied with his other major work, "The Essence of Religion"), titled "The Essence of Christianity". In it, he takes both a philosophical and an anthropological approach to answering the question "What is Christianity trying to say?" For him, it is an attempt to realize the innermost potentialities and values of humankind. Feuerbach's approach builds on Hegel's religious philosophy, insisting on God as that which Man is; God as pure presence, not transcendence. This will pave the way for philosophers such as Marx and Engels who will continue to build off these observations to found communism, among others, who share the same sense of communal, human-wide responsibility driven forward by the impetus of Reason in world-history. Enjoy! All quotes are from: Feuerbach, Ludwig. "The Essence of Christianity", ed. E. Graham Waring and F.W. Strothmann, Frederick Ungar Publishing, 1973.
