Mexican landscape architect Mario Schjetnan and his Mexico City-based firm Grupo de Diseño Urbano (GDU) undertook a rehabilitation of the oldest and, on approximately 2,140 acres, second largest park in Latin America in the early 2000s. Located in Mexico City and initially established in the 1460s for Emperor Montezuma, Schjetnan calls this the nation’s most important park and likens it to New York City’s Central Park and Washington, D.C.’s National Mall. Prioritizing restoring the environmental and historical elements of the existing landscape while incorporating newer amenities, this project is one of several that helped Schjetnan and GDU win the 2025 Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize.
