It is a good representation of the Russian influence on Finland, once a part of Russia. Number 3. Helsinki Cathedral The white Helsinki Cathedral is an impressive site when the sky is blue. The church was designed by the same architect who designed Senate Square. It was originally called St. Nicholas Church after the Russian tsar, but the name was changed when Finland gained independence from Russia in 1917, This neoclassical Lutheran church, reminiscent of ancient Greek buildings, is located on Senate Square. The result is an interior built from solid rock, with sunlight streaming down through a copper dome; morning is a good time to visit as sunlight lights up the interior.
