The Romans were a profoundly religious people - according to Polybius, "a scrupulous fear of the gods, is the very thing which keeps the Roman commonwealth together." But the conventions of our monotheistic religious background makes it difficult to understand the contours of authentic Roman belief and all too often their religion is viewed as inauthentic. One reason that it remains difficult to fully grasp roman religion is that they lacked a central holy text akin to the Bible or Quran - so this history documentary looks at the Sibylline Books, the closest thing the Romans had to a universally acknowledged divinely inspired text. Viewers will learn about the unique effect these books had on Roman religion as well as why they remained a closely guarded secret of the Roman elite and why the books themselves were tampered with by emperors to suit their own political ends before finally being destroyed in the Christian era.
