Hi friends! A lot of the study “advice” we hear seems not only as if it would be unhelpful, some of it might even be downright destructive to academic success. Other tips go directly against known scientific data that outlines how the brain learns information, stores information, and retrieves information. I thought it would be interesting to create a list of four myths I have encountered both online and in my experiences as a student and a nursing instructor. Some of these “myths” might seem controversial or even inaccurate at face value, but stick with me as we debunk these—I think you’ll be surprised at the facts behind the myths! Myth #1: Just follow the study guide when studying for exams. Fact: Study guides rarely cover everything you need for high level success on an exam—follow the course syllabus. Myth #2: Re-writing your lecture notes will help reinforce exam ideas. Fact: Studying in this way minimally engages your brain and gives you no practice with “active recall”, which is how your brain pulls information out of “storage”. Myth #3: Fit studying into “pockets of time” you have throughout your day. Fact: While this kind of studying can help you review material or go through the aforementioned index cards, a few minutes or an hour “here and there” rarely cuts it if you have large amounts of information you are responsible for knowing. Myth #4: Identify your “learning style” early on and stick to it. Fact: Your study methods need to adapt to the material you’re learning more than trying to make the material adapt to your learning style. 00:00 Debunking Study Advice 01:30 Myth #1 02:37 Myth #2 03:38 Myth #3 04:44 Myth #4 📚 Learn Like a Pro https://amzn.to/3Rrhep7 I’m Anna and I am a critical care registered nurse.
