Output signal of a CD player with non oversampling DIY DAC (PCM1704) compared with a player Philips CD880 with four times oversampling. Something more is involved getting the right sound of a CD player than solely choosing a high spec DAC chip. Digital filter, clock, transport, output stages and power supply all contribute to the end result. Avoid SPDIF as it will never be beneficial for, rather degrading the sound quality. Maybe NON OS has come into attention because it improves sound dramatically on players with a not so good digital filter such as SAA7220 and it is also an easy modify with those. Yes the sound is attractive, to be subjective. Very accurate timings, strong bass and very pure highs when you remove all output filtering. But it wont be a good all round performer, there is just something a little wrong with the sound. Over time DAC's have improved. A good base for a DIY project would be to choose the latest DAC chip, interface it by I2S and use low jitter clock.
