Welcome to another Lisbon Walking Tour! Today we are going to take a morning walk around one of the most visited Lisbon neighborhoods, Belem. Belém is a historic district located along the Tagus River, known for its beautiful architecture, gardens, and maritime heritage. It was from Belém’s harbor that explorers like Vasco da Gama set sail in the late 15th century, opening new sea routes to India and other distant lands. Today, the district is a popular destination for visitors who come to see its notable monuments, including the Jeronimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of Manueline architecture. Built in the early 16th century, the monastery was commissioned by King Manuel I to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s successful voyage to India. The structure is known for its ornate façade, elaborate carvings, and intricate cloisters, all reflective of Portugal’s wealth and power during its golden age of exploration. The monastery also houses the tombs of significant figures like Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões. Just a few steps away from the Monastery, you will find the famous Pasteis de Belem, a famous Portuguese pastry, originating from the Belém district. These custard tarts, with a crisp, flaky pastry shell and a creamy, sweet filling, were first created by monks at the nearby Jerónimos Monastery in the early 19th century. After the monastery closed, the secret recipe was sold to a local bakery, known as the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, where they have been made ever since. Unlike the more common pastéis de nata found throughout Portugal, only this bakery produces the original Pastéis de Belém, using the closely guarded recipe. Don't forget to check around some other important Belem museums like Museu dos Coches and MAAT.
