Hey! In this video, I will show you how to convert LUTs to work with photos in different color profiles. LUTs came to us from the world of video, and there, as you probably know, the concept of color profiles was absent for a long time, therefore almost all LUTs that you can find on the Internet are created to work with material in rec709 or sRGB. However, sometimes it becomes necessary to apply LUTs to photos in a profile with wider color Gamut, for example, ProPhoto, and then continue editing photos in that color profile. But your LUTs are not designed to work with it. What do you do in this case? I have the image opened in Photoshop; it is in sRGB color profile. I will immediately rename the layer in order to avoid misunderstanding. Now I’m going to create a copy of this image and convert it to ProPhoto profile using Convert to Profile command from Edit menu. I'm going to launch 3D LUT Creator and load the photo in sRGB profile there. Let’s apply some ready-made LUT from LUT manager. I will send this LUT to Photoshop. I will also indicate in the name of the layer that this LUT works for sRGB. I’m going to open the image in ProPhoto profile and load the same LUT there. As you can see, sRGB LUT doesn’t work with images in ProPhoto. Actually, it works, but the result is different in color. What should you do in this case? To get the same result I need to convert my LUT into ProPhoto profile. I’m going to 3D LUT Creator to compile the edit to an external LUT. So now all adjustments are loaded as External LUT in the section for external LUTs . Here in the menu it is possible to convert a LUT to another color profile: AdobeRGB, MelissaRGB or ProPhoto. In my case, I need to convert LUT to ProPhoto. Let’s do it! I'm sending it to Photoshop. I will rename the layer with LUT for the future. That is, I have a photo in ProPhoto profile, my LUT is in ProPhoto profile, and I get the following result. Compare it with the photo in sRGB with applied LUT in sRGB. There are no differences! Your new LUT for ProPhoto images can be saved in 3D LUT Creator for future use, just don’t forget to mention a profile in the name of the LUT, otherwise you will get confused. So, we figured out how to convert LUTs from sRGB to wide-gamut color spaces! What if you have LUT in ProPhoto, and you need to apply it to photos in sRGB? Of course, you can convert all photos to ProPhoto, then apply LUT for ProPhoto and convert photos back to sRGB. This is not practical. To convert LUT back to sRGB, you need a Hald file - this is a graphical representation of a LUT. You can download it for free at 3dlutcreator.com from Materials and LUTs page. Hald with size 8 will be more than enough. Hald is naturally in sRGB profile, so I’m going to convert it to ProPhoto. Next I’m going to apply the LUT for ProPhoto to Hald image. That LUT is loaded into 3D LUT Creator. I’m merging layers and converting the image back to sRGB. It is important to save the Hald in the original PNG file format. Now in 3D LUT Creator I will reset all settings and drag and drop the Hald to the external LUT section. Done! LUT, which was created for ProPhoto, is now converted to sRGB! I'll send it to Photoshop. Here I have a photo in sRGB, here is a layer with the original LUT in sRGB, I will turn it off for now. Let’s apply my ProPhoto LUT, which I converted to sRGB. As you can see, both LUTs work in the same way! This method is universal, you can use it to convert LUTs for working with images in other color profiles. That's all!
