Hello dolls, 🌼 today I'm taking you on a journey far east, down the Hippie Trail. Welcome to the hippest trip of the 60s & 70s! The Hippie Trail, a journey through time and counterculture, was more than a route - it was an odyssey of discovery. Young dreamers, disillusioned with Western life, sought something real, something beyond the ordinary. The road stretched eastward, through Istanbul's bazaars, Persia's mystical lands, and Afghanistan's Kabul, where Chicken Street became a hub. India, with Varanasi's sacred Ganges and Goa's golden beaches, offered spiritual baptism. Kathmandu's Freak Street, a hazy mountaintop hideaway, drew seekers. They came from all corners, students, artists, seekers, and musicians, traveling in VW vans, rickety buses, or simply hitchhiking. The journey was slow, unpredictable, and sometimes treacherous, but it was a passage into another way of being. The Hippie Trail, less a fixed route and more a loosely defined journey, stretched from Europe to South Asia. Travelers sought Delhi, Varanasi, Goa, Bombay, Madras, and Kathmandu. Some ventured further, to Trivandrum or Sri Lanka. They started in London, Amsterdam, or Berlin, with Americans flying to Luxembourg or Paris. The route, often by ferry and then by road, went through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, reaching India. This immersion promised transformation and escape. The roots of the Hippie Trail trace back to the 1950s, with Beat Generation writers romanticizing Eastern travel. By the late 1950s, Europe longed for adventure. Oswald “Paddy” Garrow-Fisher's Indiaman bus service in 1957 pioneered overland travel to Calcutta. Other bus services, like Penn Overland and Swagman Tours, followed. The “Magic Bus” and vehicles like “Albert” made the journey possible for many. Istanbul’s Pudding Shop became a hub for travelers. The 1960s saw the Hippie Trail surge in popularity. Against political turmoil and shifting norms, young people sought escape. The East, with its spiritual traditions, became a beacon. The Beatles’ visit to Rishikesh in 1968 amplified this. Travelers, often in their early twenties, sought wisdom and freedom. The Hippie Trail was both a spiritual journey and a budget-friendly escape, with cannabis widely available along the route. Charles Sobhraj, “The Serpent” and “The Bikini Killer,” preyed on travelers, drugging and murdering them. His crimes stretched across Thailand, India, and Nepal. By the 1970s, the trail had become commercialized, with guidebooks like Lonely Planet’s “Across Asia on the Cheap” aiding travelers. Goa became a hippie haven, and the trail extended to Southeast Asia and Australia. The Hippie Trail was more than a road - it was a revolution. A fleeting, golden moment in history where the road itself was the destination, and the journey was the only thing that mattered.
