Roche Abbey is a medieval Cistercian monastery located in South Yorkshire, England, and it holds a rich history dating back to its foundation in the 12th century. The abbey was established in 1147 by Richard de Busli, a local magnate, and Cistercian monks from Newminster Abbey in Northumberland were brought in to inhabit and cultivate the site. The Cistercian order, known for its emphasis on simplicity, hard work, and self-sufficiency, played a significant role in shaping the landscape and economy of medieval England. The abbey flourished for several centuries, amassing wealth and influence through agricultural endeavours, wool production, and trade.
