In this video I show you how to build your own custom bugout bag. A 96-hour kit, often called a "go bag," is a portable, grab-and-go emergency kit designed to sustain you for four or more days. You might know this as a 72-hour kit, but personally I don’t think 3 days is long enough so I bumped it up a notch. FEMA estimates that it can take at least 72 hours, and sometimes longer, for substantial assistance to arrive during a major catastrophe like a natural disaster. Based on other major catastrophes we’ve seen, I can guarantee it will be longer, perhaps much longer. A 96-hour kit can be used at home or for an evacuation scenario. Your home is usually the best place to stay if possible, but depending on the severity of the situation (gas leak, unsound structure, civil unrest, mandatory area evacuations, etc.) you might need to leave the safety and comfort of your home. A well-prepared kit should contain essential gear and supplies to keep you safe, fed, hydrated, and sheltered for at least the critical first few days of a disaster. Many items in this kit will overlap with the topics covered in the following chapters, contributing to your overall emergency supplies—where some redundancy is highly beneficial. I love the old prepper adage: “Two is one, and one is none.” These kits should be tailored to the needs of each individual and is limited to portable items and kept in a pack or suitcase that can be carried or pulled by the person it was built for.
