Ogata Kōrin was so far ahead of his time that generations passed before others followed his lead. This late-starter modernist did something shockingly simple—and shockingly radical—foreshadowing an artistic revolution that wouldn’t arrive until the 20th century. Even Gustav Klimt, with all his shimmering gold and modernist daring, ultimately arrives at a destination Kōrin had already glimpsed centuries earlier. Part One explores the trajectory leading up to Kōrin’s masterpiece Red and White Plum Blossoms. Even if you think you already know everything about this painting, you will be positively thrilled at how much new information has come to light in recent years, confirming it truly is one of the most enigmatic works of art ever created. Kōrin’s late paintings are stripped down to single objects depicted in their essential form and character, yet they somehow still carry all the emotion and story of the world they were removed from. The result is images that remain powerful today, even if we no longer recognize the cultural references that originally gave them life. Special thanks for Rami Olsen @HearBetweenTheLines both for mastering the theme music as well as being an indispensable guru for all things creative, especially digital editing and color grading. Book tip: There is very little information on Kōrin in English. If you want to learn more about Kōrin, then “Ogata Korin: Art in Early Modern Japan” by Frank Feltens must be on your bookshelf.
