L.v.Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.1 in F minor Op.2-1, with a theme-and-structure analysis and synchronized sheet music (score) Performance: Wilhelm Backhaus (piano), 1963/10 Stereo, Victoria Hall, Geneva Analysis, Score Editing, Synch: ScoreMan 00:00 Movement 1: Allegro 02:58 Movement 2: Adagio 06:56 Movement 3: Menuetto. Allegretto 09:20 Movement 4: Prestissimo OVERVIEW Beethoven composed his Piano Sonata No.1 in F minor, Op.2 No.1 in 1795, and it was published in 1796 as part of the three Op.2 sonatas. He dedicated the set to his teacher Joseph Haydn, though the dedication was somewhat formal rather than deeply affectionate, as Beethoven’s relationship with Haydn was complicated. This sonata marks Beethoven’s first published sonata, yet it already demonstrates his individuality and ambition to push the boundaries of the classical style he inherited from Mozart and Haydn. HISTORICAL CONTEXT Period of composition: Around 1794–1795, shortly after Beethoven moved permanently to Vienna. He was establishing himself as a virtuoso pianist and young composer of promise. Dedication to Haydn: A gesture of respect toward his mentor, though Beethoven was already seeking independence from his teacher’s shadow. Viennese reception: The sonata was recognized as unusually bold for a debut — more dramatic and technically challenging than what was typical in early piano sonatas at the time. MUSICAL SIGNIFICANCE A bold beginning: For a “first” sonata, this work is remarkably ambitious in length, technical demands, and emotional intensity. Individual voice: Beethoven blends Classical elegance with the stormy passion that would become his hallmark, foreshadowing the Romantic sonata. Virtuoso writing: Demands great agility and dramatic expression, affirming Beethoven’s own brilliance as a pianist. Foreshadows later works: The dramatic F minor key and the stormy character can be seen as a pre-echo of Beethoven’s later F minor sonata, Op.57 (Appassionata). ✨ Beethoven's Masterpieces (sorted by Opus) • L. v.
