"Unique in its name, because there is only one Greer in the United States. Greer, South Carolina also enjoys a number of unusual factors which make it a most progressive city. A city where industry and agriculture maintain a balance." This film, produced by Hollysmith Pictures in Charlotte, NC, was likely made upon request by the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce. Though we have not yet dated it precisely, it appears to be filmed in the late 1940s or very early 1950s. It contains lengthy and invaluable footage of Greer streets, businesses, and people. The film highlights certain businesses and ignores others, likely focused on those that were members of the Chamber. Some of the key businesses shown are: – Southern and P&N Railways – Dobson Lumber and Dobson Hardware – Bank of Greer – Ponder's Ice Cream – Community Cash Grocery – McLeskey Todd Drug Store – Smith & James – Duncan Motor Company and the Benson-Duncan Motor Company – Grand Movie Theater – police, fire, city council, CPW, flower club, women's club, and many more! The Museum does not own an original copy of this film and does not know if one exists; this is from a DVD given to the Museum in 2011.
