🎷 Want a big, warm, controlled saxophone sound? Before you switch reeds, mouthpieces, or horns… you must fix your embouchure. In today’s video, I demystify the concept of embouchure and show you the 3 biggest mistakes that are destroying your sound — and exactly how to fix them. These are the same issues I’ve seen over and over again from students (and that I struggled with myself years ago!), and when you fix them… 👉 your tone gets fuller 👉 articulation becomes cleaner 👉 your tuning stabilizes 👉 everything feels easier ⸻ 🔥 The 3 Embouchure Mistakes 00:40 1️⃣ Bad Air Support Weak air support creates tension everywhere — jaw, throat, embouchure, tongue. I’ll show you my 10-10-10 breathing method and how to play soft without tonguing to find hidden tension. ⸻ 09:15 2️⃣ Biting the Mouthpiece Once your airflow improves, biting becomes easier to fix — but if it’s still happening: • Take just the neck • Play soft long tones on concert E (Ab concert for alto) • Relax your upper teeth & lip • Adjust how much mouthpiece is in your mouth • Aim for a round, unshaky, centered sound This exercise exposes everything immediately. ⸻ 18:55 3️⃣ Lower Lip & Jaw Problems Many players shape their jaw unnaturally and crush their lower lip. “No-Embouchure Embouchure” (Garry Bergonzi’s approach): → Place the mouthpiece naturally, without strange jaw positions → Let the air and throat do the work → Stay flexible & resonant ⸻ I hope this helps you take your tone and control to the next level!
