Darwin - California's Next Ghost Town?

Darwin is located on the Western edge of Death Valley, about 40 miles Southeast of Lone Pine California. A former mining town, Darwin now has a population of approximately 35 people (as of the 2020 Census). At one time in the late 1800's, Darwin was the largest city in Inyo County with a population of nearly 3500 people. Unfortunately, factors such as a large smallpox outbreak, numerous fires in town, and mining booms in other locations caused Darwin's population to become decimated. Today artists, retirees, and those looking to live away from society inhabit Darwin.
