Autumn Leaves is one of the first jazz standards that many beginner jazz guitarists tackle - and that makes sense; the form is fairly typical, and it's relatively easy to solo over. That being said, Autumn Leaves still comes with its challenges, and improvising over it can be tricky if you're relatively new to jazz guitar. In this jazz guitar lesson, I'm going to give you the tools you'll need to solo confidently over Autumn Leaves. We're going to take a look at the form, the arpeggios that you're going to be using, and the scale you'll need. This isn't going to be the most complex approach to this jazz standard, but it will equip you with the tools - and the confidence - to improvise over Autumn Leaves with a sense of direction and purpose.
