Bled is world-famous for its emerald lake, medieval castle perched on a cliff, and its location at the edge of the Julian Alps, one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Slovenia. Leaving Bled, the route passes through Lesce, a small but important town in the Upper Carniola region, known for its proximity to the Sava Dolinka River and as a gateway to the alpine valleys. The surrounding landscape features gentle hills, open fields, and views of the Karavanke (Karawanks) mountain range, which forms the natural border between Slovenia and Austria. At 11:50, the drive joins Slovenia’s A2 motorway, a key east–west highway connecting central Slovenia with Austria. This section offers smooth driving through alpine foothills, forests, and snow-covered fields during winter. The mountains gradually rise closer to the road, especially the peaks of the Karavanke Alps, creating a dramatic winter atmosphere. At 22:45, the journey reaches the Karawankentunnel toll station (Mautstelle Karawankentunnel). The Karawanken Tunnel runs beneath the Karavanke Mountains and is one of the most important cross-border tunnels in the Alps, linking Slovenia directly with southern Austria. Shortly after passing through the tunnel, the drive enters Austria. At 24:45, the route continues on Austria’s A11 (Karawanken Autobahn), descending through alpine terrain with views of forested slopes and winter landscapes. This road leads toward the broader Gail Valley and connects seamlessly with the A2 Southern Autobahn, reached at 37:50. The drive then approaches Villach, arriving at 40:28. Villach is a charming Austrian town in the state of Carinthia, surrounded by the Gailtal Alps, Karawanke Alps, and not far from the Hohe Tauern range. The town is an important transport hub and is known for its alpine setting, colorful old town, and proximity to lakes such as Lake Faak and Lake Ossiach. The journey concludes at 47:45 at ATRIO Villach, one of the largest shopping centers in Carinthia, located near the A2 motorway and serving as a modern landmark at the edge of the city. This drive captures the beauty of winter in the Alps, combining historic towns, quiet villages, modern motorways, and some of the most scenic mountain landscapes in Slovenia and Austria. #Slovenia #Austria #Bled #Villach #Karawankentunnel #Karawanks #JulianAlps #Alps #WinterDrive #WinterDriving #SnowDrive #ScenicDrive #MountainRoads #AlpineRoads #EuropeanRoadTrip #DrivingEurope #RoadTrip #Dashcam #4KDrive #solo_traveler_7o
