Focus: Third-man runs, overlapping movements, and clinical finishing. 1. The Setup Players: 3 Attackers (7, 8, 9), 2 Defenders (3, 5), and 1 Goalkeeper. Area: Final third of the pitch, divided by a horizontal "trigger line" (yellow dashed line). Equipment: Cones for starting positions and balls at player 8’s feet. 2. The Tactical Script Phase A: The Initial Movement (The Decoy) Player 8 starts with the ball and passes wide to Player 7. Trigger: As soon as the pass is made, Player 8 makes a diagonal "decoy" run toward the near post, drawing the defender (3) with them. Simultaneously, Player 9 holds their position centrally to keep the second defender (5) occupied. Phase B: The Combination (The Overlap/Third Man) Player 7 carries the ball down the wing. Instead of a simple cross, they look for a combination. Player 9 drops slightly or shifts to create a passing lane. The Rotation: Player 7 cuts inside or plays a "wall pass" with Player 9, while Player 8 continues their run to clear the space or becomes the target for the second-phase pass. Phase C: The Finish Once the defense is stretched by the horizontal and vertical runs, the ball is played into the "Golden Zone" (the center of the box). Player 9 or a trailing Player 7 must finish with a one-touch shot. 3. Key Coaching Points Timing of the Run: Players must not enter the box too early. The run should be timed so they meet the ball at peak speed. Weight of Pass: The initial pass to the wing must be firm to keep the tempo high. Communication: Non-verbal cues (pointing or eye contact) are essential for the overlapping player to know when to trigger the run. Clinical Finishing: Low and hard into the corners, across the face of the goalkeeper.
