Kim Il Sung: The Founder of North Korea Kim Il Sung was born Kim Song Ju on April 15, 1912, in Mangyongdae, near Pyongyang, which was then part of Japanese-occupied Korea. His family was relatively well-off but deeply nationalistic, strongly opposed to Japanese colonial rule (1910–1945). His grandfather, Kim Bo Hyun, was a devout Christian, while his father, Kim Hyong Jik, was a teacher and an active independence activist. Kim Il Sung remains the foundational figure of North Korea. His policies shaped the country into a highly militarized, totalitarian state. His Juche ideology continues to dominate North Korean politics, and his personality cult persists, with his embalmed body displayed in the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun. North Korea officially refers to him as “Eternal President”, and his rule set the stage for his family’s continued leadership, making North Korea one of the most enduring hereditary dictatorships in history.
