Batting average is arguably the most well-known statistic in all of sports. It's also one of the oldest. But while the stat carries a large amount of historical significance, its usefulness has come under question in recent years. In this edition of baseball explained, I look at the historical context of batting average, as well as how it is calculated. I also talk about how newer stats have become more accepted and how batting average doesn't do as good a job as some may think.
