In an exclusive interview with India Today, top cardiac surgeon Dr. Naresh Trehan welcomes the government's next-generation GST reforms for the healthcare sector. The changes, effective from September 22, include making individual health and life insurance GST-free, down from 18%, and reducing rates on medical devices, oxygen, and diagnostic kits to 5%. Dr. Trehan stated this will be a "big relief to the public" and assured that providers will pass on the benefits. He said, "we will all pass on the benefits that have been given by the GST Council to the patient so that it becomes more affordable." The reforms also make crucial drugs, including for cancer, cheaper, significantly lowering treatment costs.
