Six decades and several thousand ballads later the big Burl is still at it. So, here he is: Burl Ives. The Legend. And he's in better voice than ever before. “You perform well,” Burl once said, “when you had too much or too little sleep and the stars are right.” Well for sure, guitarist Grady Martin either had too little or too much sleep or his stars were right, too. And Charlie McCoy has never been so outstanding as he is on harmonica here. All of the songs-including “Miss Pauline” and “When She Cries” - are superb, though my personal favorite is “ Payin' My Dues.” About “Dues: ”When you hear this ballad you hear a mellowness and a strength in Burl's voice never before expressed so richly. Written by one of the singer's close friends, Randy Sparks, “Dues” is Burl's own story when it talks of a man who climbed high, knew the view from the top, then had to start “Payin' My Dues Again.” Because Burl has been ther … and back. Above all it is the ballad of an unconquerable spirit. That about says it all when you describe this singer. Renewing his record career with the single “The Best Is Yet To Come,” Burl makes you know that he truly believes that for himself and wants every listener to share the feeling. “The People, Yes, Carl Sandburg said in one of his great poems. That is Burls unshakable belief, reflected throughout the fabric of is work and is life. In is ballads he affirms his faith in the essential goodness, decency and beauty of man with all his flaws and imperfections. His affection for his country and for all people is and has been consistent and overwhelming. He believes with all his heart that no matter what the doomsayers predict for America and the world- Te Best Is Yet To Come.” And that makes you feel good. Which is what all Burl Ives songs set out to do … and succeed wondrously. In a world full of too many people making sad sounds, Burl Ives is a joyous minstrel and a man to cherish.
