Man Eating Catfish Attacks In India | Animal Attacks | True Stories Goonch catfish are not ordinary river dwellers. They can grow to over six feet in length and two hundred pounds. Goonch generally feed on smaller fish, but they may have evolved a different diet in the Great Kali River. This river between India and Nepal is often used to dispose of human remains after cremation, and some believe that this may have allowed these catfish to develop a taste for human flesh. In April 1998, 17-year-old Dil Bahadur was dragged underwater in front of his girlfriend. Three months later, another boy was pulled into the river before his father. In 2007, an 18-year-old boy disappeared in the water. None of their bodies were ever found. In the latest attack, witnesses saw an animal they described as an "elongated pig". British biologist and angler Jeremy Wade investigated the cases for his TV show River Monsters. At first he was skeptical that a goonch catfish was involved, but when he heard that all the attacks took place within a five-mile radius, he became interested. The theories of whirlpools, crocodiles and bull sharks have all been debunked. Wade set up the trap and caught the 161-pound goonch. He said, "If it got hold of you, there would be no escape." It has not been proven whether the goonch he caught was the one who committed the attacks, but investigations have shown that human-sized fish were present in the river.
