Anne Akhmatovoj 13:37 Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-75) -composer Jadwiga Rappe -alto Maja Nosowska -piano Playlist: The art of Russian song: Glinka, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky...: The art of Russian song: Glinka, Mussorgsk... In the late vocal work of Shostakovich he is content with a rich inner world and abundant invention, reminiscent of the works of his earliest period as a composer but less extravagant. In the Marina Tsvetayeva cycle he even uses a modified serial technique (first song). The poet escaped from Russia, returned, found life insuppotable and killed herself. In this work Shostakovich again proves the quality and strength of his literary discernment. In structure the poems concern the personal life of the poet (first two poems), literary concerns with the last two of the three a biting reprisal for Tsar Nicholas's supposed collusion in the death of Pushkin and a tribute to another persecuted poet, Anna Akhmatova. In the orchestrated version Shostakovich used the numerous resorces with skillful aplomb. The use of bells is especially pronounced, most effectively in the closing song where the poet's words themselves refer to bells. Source: http://www.allmusic.com/composition/poems-...
