We especially recommend Jhankar restaurant where we had the best Rajasthani Thali (थाली) and regular Thali during our entire India travels. Jodhpur (जोधपुर) is also worth exploring on foot or tuk-tuk where you can just get lost down the myriad of colorful alleys. For dinner we suggest rooftop views at a restaurant where you can clearly see Mehrangarh Fort (मेहरानगढ़ का दुर्ग) lit up at night. It is just as spectacular by night as it is by day. Forts, Markets, Street Food & Rajasthani Thali 🇮🇳 | India Travel 🌅 Arrival in the Blue City We arrive in Jodhpur, famously known as the Blue City of Rajasthan, and jump straight into exploring. Dressed in blue (pure coincidence… or is it?), we’re ready for two full days of discovering why this destination is an essential Rajasthan stop. 🏰 Exploring Mehrangarh Fort Our adventure begins at Mehrangarh Fort, one of India’s most spectacular and massive forts perched atop a rocky hill overlooking Jodhpur. While entry to the fort is free, we recommend paying extra to explore the palaces and museum inside. Unlike the bustling, inhabited fort in Jaisalmer, Mehrangarh Fort feels historic and peaceful, especially in the early morning. The climb up is steep, but the panoramic views of the city’s blue houses and old cannons on the ramparts are worth every step. If you visit, allow several hours to take it all in. 🛍️ Shopping & Puppetry After wandering the fort, Sam scores a pair of matching puppets (future home décor!), plus a new colorful polo shirt as a travel memento. Shopping for local crafts is a highlight, and Jodhpur’s markets don’t disappoint. 🌇 Rooftop Sunsets & Hotel Life Our hotel in Jodhpur boasts amazing rooftop terraces, offering jaw-dropping sunset views of the fort. For an even better vantage point, we visit Castle Rock Hotel and Restaurant, which possibly has the best fort views in the city—perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. 🕰️ Sardar Market & Clock Tower Day two kicks off with a stroll through the bustling Sardar Market near the iconic Ghanta Ghar (clock tower). Here, we watch vendors set up shop, locals shop for produce, and tourists browse for souvenirs like carpets and saris. Early mornings are best for beating the crowds and soaking in the local vibe. 🥤 Lassi Tasting & Lunch Breaks For lunch, we seek out Indique, one of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants. Though it’s closed, we enjoy saffron and salty lassis—two unique takes on India’s classic yogurt drink. Our second lunch spot, Jhankar, impresses with its lush courtyard and buttery garlic naan. 🌊 Getting Lost in the Blue Maze Jodhpur’s blue-painted houses create a dreamy maze that begs for aimless wandering. We discuss the mystery behind the color—possibly chosen to keep homes cool and as a nod to the city’s Brahmin heritage—but either way, it’s stunning to see in person. 🐾 Street Animals & City Life Encounters with adorable street puppies sleeping in tuk-tuks and on motorcycles add a dose of cuteness to our city wanderings. Plus, we spot a rare pet cat in a local restaurant (most animals here are cows, monkeys, and dogs!). 🍛 Thali Night at Jhankar Dinner is a feast at Jhankar, where we order both a Rajasthani Thali and a Jumbo Thali—giant platters of vegetarian delights. We sample everything from spicy lentil dal to biryani with cauliflower, rich creamy curries with cottage cheese, and an array of veggies and raita. The food is spicy, colorful, and deeply satisfying. We also get complimentary desserts, a sweet finish to an epic meal.
