History of Svan Towers. Georgia

#Svan Towers are the defining symbol of #Svaneti, #Georgia, and date back to the 9th-12th centuries. Built as defensive structures, they protected families from invaders and natural disasters. Each household had its own tower, serving as both a fortress and a watchtower. In times of danger, fires were lit above the towers to signal warnings across the valleys. These stone towers stand around 20-25 meters tall, with four or five floors. Their thick walls narrows at the top, making them earthquake-resistant. The ground floors housed livestock, while upper levels served as living quarters and defense posts. The only entrance was several meters above ground, accessible by a folding ladder. Mestia and Ushguli hold the highest concentration of these towers, some over 1,000 years old. Though most are no longer in use, many remain intact, earning Upper Svaneti a #UNESCO World Heritage status. Some are part of open-air museums, preserving their unique medieval architecture. Unlike any other fortress system in the world, Svan Towers represent the resilience and independence of the Svan people. Their distinctive silhouette against the #Caucasus Mountains makes Svaneti one of Georgia’s most extraordinary historic landscapes.
