Duo Y Recital, 11/22/2022, UNCG Tew Recital Hall Marimba: Amy Xin Yin Alto Saxophone: Jia-Yu Yang Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone and Marimba (2018) Program notes from composer: "The first two themes played by alto saxophone are based on motives. These motives consist of pentatonic scales and semitones, which are both often used in Japanese modern music and Japanese folk songs. After the introduction and exposition, the motives are broken into small pieces in the faster tempo section, and the rhythm is borrowed from the accompaniment. In the slow section, I tried to develop a free feeling but still kept the central element of the subject. Each motive appears again in the recapitulation and the coda sections, ending with excitement. It was not my intention to emphasize the aspect of traditional Japanese music at the beginning of the composition process. However, the chords and rhythms from the Gagaku (Japanese classical music historically used for imperial court music and dances) and Matsuri-bayashi (Japanese music which uses bamboo flutes and taiko drums to accompany the divine procession in front of a temple) naturally influence my composition process. Therefore, this piece's expressions and details were inspired by Japanese traditional music instruments such as Shō (a 17-pipe mouth organ), Kin (string instrument), and Taiko drums. Since it is not the title music associated with any subject, I would invite the audience to expand their imagination freely." 追榮 祥 Sho Oie was born in 1991 in Chiba, Japan.
