This is the Black-throated Huet-huet, a distinctive tapaculo of the temperate forests of southern South America. The name huet-huet comes from , the language of the people of southern Chile and Argentina, and it is onomatopoeic—it mimics the bird’s call. That is why both parts of the name are identical and bird-like in sound, rather than Latin-sounding. You can hear this characteristic call at the end of the video. The species is mainly found in southern Chile, but also occurs in Argentina, where this bird was filmed. Although relatively common and often heard, Black-throated Huet-huets are rarely seen in the open, so I was particularly pleased to capture this footage of the bird scratching through leaf litter in search of insects.
