Introducing the Learning Engineering Institute | Just an Hour: Engaging with Ideas

Learning engineering is an interdisciplinary field that combines principles from various domains such as cognitive science, instructional design, data analysis, computer science, and educational technology to improve learning experiences and outcomes. Informed by the university charter, ASU’s Learning Engineering Institute (LEI) builds partnerships across communities of research and practice, utilizes multiple research methodologies, and aims to enhance the quality and impact of learning across ASU’s diverse learner populations. The LEI’s transdisciplinary approach emphasizes the use of large-scale learning data and rapid iteration of new educational approaches within frameworks of human-centered design. Guests: Danielle McNamara, Professor and Executive Director of the Learning Engineering Institute, Psychology; Affiliate Faculty, MLFTC Danielle McNamara is a professor of psychology and executive director of the Learning Engineering Institute at Arizona State University. She is an expert in cognitive and learning sciences, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence in education. She has developed and tested several intelligent tutoring systems and text analysis tools to improve students’ comprehension and writing skills. She is a fellow of the American Educational Research Association and the founding editor of the journal Technology, Mind, and Behavior. She has published over 300 papers and received over 20 million dollars in funding from various sources. https://search.asu.edu/profile/1805468 Scotty Craig, Associate Professor, Human Engineering, The Polytechnic School; Affiliate Faculty, MLFTC Scotty D. Craig is an associate professor of human systems engineering within The Polytechnic School of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. Dr. Craig is a learning engineer with expertise in cognitive science, design science, and the science of learning (specifically learning technology). He has contributions at the intersection of psychology, education, and technology within the areas of multimedia learning, virtual environments, as well as development and evaluation of learning technology within laboratory and applied settings. https://search.asu.edu/profile/1978855 Rod Roscoe is an associate professor of human systems engineering in the Polytechnic School of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, and a Diane and Gary Tooker Professor of Effective Education in STEM. He is affiliate faculty of the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and a member of the Center for Human, Artificial Intelligence, and Robot Teaming (CHART). His research investigates how the intersection of learning science, computer science, and user science can inform effective and innovative uses of educational technologies. He is also interested in how cognitive, metacognitive, and motivational learning processes can be scaffolded by educational technology. Recent work has explored engineering education with a focus on human systems engineering and applied psychology. https://search.asu.edu/profile/1809961 Some useful links: LEI: https://learningengineering.asu.edu/ Godell & Schatz: Learning Engineering at a Glance - https://www.armyupress.army.mil/Journ...
