New York Sikhs demand vote to secede Punjab from India

(15 Aug 2017) Members of the Sikh community held a rally across the street from the United Nations building in New York on Monday to demand the right to hold a vote on seceding Punjab state from India. "The state of Punjab, which is currently occupied by India, wants independence from India," Jatinder Singh, a director of Sikhs for Justice said. "We wish to hold a referendum peacefully in the year 2020," he added. Gurpatwant Pannun, an attorney for Sikhs for Justice, is lobbying the members of the UN General Assembly to take up the issue when they meet in September. The demand for what the Sikhs call "Referendum 2020," a non-binding vote to liberate 'Indian-occupied Punjab', comes on the 70th anniversary of India becoming a sovereign country.
