CINCINNATI (Deb Dixon) - It looks like lip balm; that's how some young people get away with having the drug that used to be big on the East Coast. Now it's popular in the Tri-State. It's called Wax. It feels like lip balm but the marijuana concentrate gets users higher faster and it lasts much longer than joints. Wax is the oil of marijuana plants and has a high level of THC, the chemical that gets users high. It came up when the son of a doctor who was expelled from prestigious Seven Hills High School blamed drugs for crimes that involved guns, drugs and a burglary plan that included torturing the residents inside the home. David Morad told police his drug of choice was Wax. He had photos in his phone to back it up and it included pictures of Wax being made. It's a dangerous process because it involves packing a tube with marijuana then blasting it with highly flammable butane. Cincinnati Police Captain Jeff Butler said, "You force butane, creating a vacuum that forces oils to be released. But forcing butane into a small area is dangerous. One simple spark can cause an explosion or fire." There are dangers in smoking Wax too, it has hallucinogenic properties. Captain Butler said the young people on it go into an almost catatonic state, unable to remember what is going on and unable to recall simple information. Street names for Wax include "Dab" because it takes just a dab of Wax to get high because of the high level of THC. Butler said parents, teachers and even police don't know what to look for when it comes to wax. Some of that is on social media. Street terms are Butter, Honeycomb or Crackle and Glass when the format of Wax is more like peanut brittle than lip balm. Butler is offering to teach the police department about the drug, and schools in his area. That includes the school David Morad attended.
