Laing, author of 'The Divided Self' and 'The Politics of Experience', is interviewed by Gregory Jackson on his approach to psychotherapy, and the way in which, from his perspective, the psychiatric establishment fails those it claims to treat, by ignoring their humanity, trivializing the subjective experience of mental suffering, and exploiting the political and legal powerlessness of those diagnosed as 'psychotic' - a diagnosis that as Dr Laing points out, is typically made by the psychiatrist in less than three minutes, and is followed by involuntary incarceration, powerful medication, and electric shock 'therapy'.
