El Grito de Lares - The Cry of Lares (Puerto Rican Independence Song)

I completely missed the 150th anniversary of the Cry of Lares last year, so here's a video to make up for it. For those who are unaware, the Cry of Lares (Spanish: el Grito de Lares) was the first of three major Puerto Rican uprisings against colonialism. In 1868, the Puerto Rican people rose up against the Spanish and declared the Republic of Puerto Rico, but the uprising was swiftly crushed. The island once again rose up against the Spanish in 1897 and against the Americans in 1950. Puerto Rico still remains a colony today, albeit under the Americans rather than the Spanish. In 2017 the Americans showed just how much they care for the island when they allowed 3000 Puerto Ricans to die in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Hopefully the Puerto Rican people can rise up once again and win their freedom. And as the song says; if they fail once more, may they try a thousand more times.
