Bowstring Covered Bridge. Unique structure because there are only two bowstring covered bridges left in the United States. Built in 1870, the Germantown Bridge crosses the Little Twin Creek in Germantown, Ohio. Little Twin Creek drains a small portion of southwestern Montgomery County and has a bed width at the bridge of 80'. Little Twin Creek is usually a shallow stream and generally dries up in the summer. Germantown Bridge was originally located on the Dayton Pike. It was moved in 1911 to its present location. The bridge is only accessible for pedestrian traffic. The Germantown Covered Bridge is one of the more famous covered bridges in Ohio and the United States because it is one of only two bowstring-suspension bridges left in the world. The other bowstring is the John Bright Covered Bridge in Fairfield County, Ohio, which also has a Burr arch and is covered on the sides. The Germantown Bridge is the only one that has a strictly bowstring truss without any additional supports added. The covered bridge in Germantown is quite spectacular. It is 105' long and has no siding, so the entire truss can be viewed externally as well as internally. Accordingly, the curve of the bowstring, combined with the wooden-steel, compression-tension members, and the crisscrossed, steel-tie rods form enticing geometrical configurations. The floor planking is laid crosswise and the roof is shingled. The bridge has a single span and rests on concrete and stone abutments. In the early 1980's, the bridge was washed off it abutments and carried downstream. The community rallied and, piece by piece, the bridge was restored. The Germantown Bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Directions: Latitude 39.626115 Longitude -84.365504
