Tuz Gölü, also known as Salt Lake, is one of the world’s largest hypersaline lakes and the second-largest lake in Turkey. Located in the Central Anatolia region, it spans the provinces of Ankara, Konya, and Aksaray. The lake covers an area of approximately 1,665 square kilometers, although this varies significantly with the seasons. It is extremely shallow, with most areas less than one meter deep, and has a very high salinity level of around 32.9%, comparable to that of the Dead Sea. Tuz Gölü plays a vital economic role as it supplies about 40% of Turkey’s total salt production, especially during the summer months when evaporation leaves behind thick salt deposits that are harvested from large salt pans. Ecologically, Tuz Gölü is a site of great importance. It is designated as a Ramsar site (a wetland of international significance), and is home to microorganisms and algae that thrive in high-salinity conditions. The lake also serves as a crucial breeding ground for thousands of greater flamingos each summer. Visually, Tuz Gölü is known for its surreal and striking landscape, attracting many tourists and photographers. During the dry season, the salt-covered surface reflects the sky, creating a mirror-like effect that is particularly breathtaking at sunset. Visitors often walk barefoot on the salt flats and enjoy the unique, otherworldly scenery.
