"Osain is an herbalist who lives in the bush, a powerful medicine man. Worshipers explain that he too is one spirit with many aspects. Indeed, up to seven different manifestations of Osain may be present at one time; I myself have seen as many as five. A few contacts identified four 'brothers' or aspects of Osain as Elesije, Ere Osa,Demolay and Kiripiti, but these are not known to many worshipers. Adherents syncretize Osain with "Saint Francis"....In some shrines, however, worshipers surround Osain's stool with Hindu paraphernalia and may even plant a Hindu-style flag to mark it. ... It appears that the tendency to perceive Shango and Osain as having different "brothers" or aspects is strictly Trinidadian, for they are not so represented in Yoruba lore. It may be that orisha worshipers have used the various traits of each orisha as the basis for postulating distinct spirits or aspects..."
