Cars being checked STORYLINE: Kosovo police have, Monday, exhibited a large cache of weapons which they said were seized on Sunday from Serb gunmen after a siege at a monastery. Included were 24 vehicles and an armored personal carrier, guns, mines, grenades, missile launchers and a lot of ammunition. Xhelal Sveqla, Minister of Interior Affairs, told a press conference that Kosovo police officers "were confronted with well-organized masked persons who were not civilians, but a well-organized special unit supported politically, financially and logistically by Serbia." "Thanks to the professionalism of our police, Vucic's (Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić) plan to escalate the security situation in our country has now failed," he said. On Sunday a Kosovar Albanian police officer was killed by at least 30 Serb gunmen who then stormed the Orthodox monastery in Kosovo near its border with Serbia. Resulting gun battles left three assailants dead - "all of them in uniform and with military equipment," said Sveqla. He added that 2 others in uniform and 4 others who had a supporting role were arrested. Sunday’s confrontation, one of the worst incidents between the two wartime foes since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, comes after months of efforts to normalize ties between Serbia and its former province, Kosovo. Police checked cars looking for armed assailants and weapons.
