My guest today is Favour Nerrise, a 4th-year PhD student in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, pioneering research at the intersection of AI, neuroscience, and digital health. Favour’s work explores how we can detect neurodegenerative diseases (like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s) earlier by linking neural circuitry from brain scans with movement patterns captured on video. Think of it as using artificial intelligence to decode the body’s signals long before symptoms appear. Originally from Cameroon, she grew up bilingual (English and French) and began her STEM journey at age 10. After earning a Computer Science degree from the University of Maryland, she became National Chair of NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) before pursuing her PhD at Stanford. In this episode, we explore: 🧠 Chapter 1 – Her Background and Story From Cameroon to the U.S. and early STEM curiosity Leading diversity efforts in engineering education 🔬 Chapter 2 – Her Research and Impact on Medicine & Technology Explaining the scientific method behind AI + hardware disease detection Designing data pipelines for neural and movement analysis Stanford 3-Minute Thesis presentation “Quick Reflexes and Lost Memories: Teaching AI to Spot Brain Disease” — winner among dozens of entries Collaborating with Fei-Fei Li and the Stanford AI Lab Frustrations and learnings in multi-modal AI (speech, text, video) Competing on the Science Bowl TV show 🚀 Chapter 3 – The Future of AI, Health, and Ethics AI policy, neuroethics, and health equity What drives her mission to bridge tech and medicine “One belief others might disagree with” segment “If you had a billboard on Highway 101…” 👉 Connect with Favour: https://www.favournerrise.com 👉 Follow Harjoth on X: @harjothk 🧩 About the Podcast PhD Diaries with Harjoth features conversations with thinkers, scientists, and creators shaping the future of technology and human knowledge —from Stanford labs to global research centers. 🎧 Subscribe for new episodes on AI, science, and technology and the people behind them.
