Federal prosecutors say the gambling operation, known as “Operation Royal Flush,” dating back to 2019, involved rigged poker games across multiple states using advanced cheating technology such as self-shuffling machines reading cards, hidden cameras, contact lenses, and even X-ray tables. The scheme allegedly targeted ordinary players (“fish”) by inviting them to games where professional athletes (“face cards”) and others were in on the scam, ensuring the fish almost always lost. “This alleged scheme wrecked havoc across the nation. Exploiting the notoriety of some and the wallets of many," said Christopher Raia, Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office. Victims reportedly lost millions of dollars, and several high-profile figures, including athletes and coaches, have been implicated and placed on leave while the federal case proceeds. The indictment against Portland’s head coach, Chauncey Billups, was filed in the Eastern District of New York. He is set to appear in federal court in Brooklyn on Nov. 24.
