The 4 Day (4 Daagse) Walk has been celebrated for 102 years here in Nijmegen, Netherlands. It began as a series of marches from one military garrison to another for a day of games, but eventually, in 1916, the 4-day march became the main event. At the beginning of the 20th century there was already a trend of promoting physical fitness and, this lead to game days, mainly futbol, to be celebrated in military bases in Netherlands. There was also a custom to celebrate things in groups of 4 days, and it was decided to organize a 4-day march from one military base to the other to participate in game days. Today, 47,000 people (civilians and military of many countries) participate in Nijmegen's 4 Daagse March; the biggest march in the world. @walkoftheworld
