How Erik Menendez Revealed Sexual Abuse to The Jail Psychiatrist | The Menendez Brothers

Jailhouse Psychiatrist, Dr. William Vicary, Testified that Erik Menendez spent his first weeks in county jail “sobbing, hysterical, withdrawn, constantly chewing his fingernails, his fingers in his mouth, refusing to have any direct eye contact.” Dr. Vicary prescribed him a combination tranquilizer and anti-depressant, then the anti-depressant Xanax. Erik Menendez disclosed the abuse in August, 1990 and told the story in “fits and starts” in their jailhouse meetings. Dr. Vicary said he did not believe that Erik was faking. He testified that Erik first mentioned the molestation in a conversation about how he was growing angry with his parents and waking up at night screaming “Mom I hate you”, he said that “he found out one week prior to the killings that his mother knew his father had been molesting him.” (5:25) Dr. Vicary also testified that when treatment began, Erik Menendez was a “basket case”. “He was such a pathetic, wimpy, hopeless mess,” Vicary said “He wasn’t able to express anger toward anyone.” Erik did not want to reveal that he had been molested by his father because he thought he would be considered a homosexual and shunned forever. Dr. Vicary told jurors that Erik was ashamed of the abuse and “gave me several reasons for not wanting to talk about it, no matter what, even if it meant spending the rest of his life in prison.” Dr. Vicary also said that Erik was reluctant to “let this dirt out” because he feared that it “would ruin whatever was left of the family name,” and ruin his own life as well. “Everybody in the whole world would think he was a homosexual, and his girlfriend would leave him, and for the rest of his life he would be like the ‘elephant man,’ ” _________________________________________ Trial Footage: CA v.
